Chopped basil

The basil plant came from the Indian subcontinent, and was grown in Egypt. Today it can be found throughout the wider Mediterranean region.

Due to its sweet smell, it is one of the most popular spices in many world cuisines, Italian and French in particular. It is used to make vegetable soups, sauces and pasta, to prepare simpler meat, poultry, fish and seafood dishes, and as a spice for salad dressings. The famous Italian regional dish known as pesto is made with this spice.
