Ground blue poppy

The earliest records on the use of poppy come from Mesopotamia, where it was used as a medicine.

In Croatian cuisine, poppy is most frequently used to make cakes and bagels, such as the traditional makovnjača (sweet poppy seed scroll loaf), bučnica (pumpkin strudel) and other desserts. It can also give new, unusual flavours to savoury dishes. Poppy seed is mainly used as sprinkle for cakes and bagels. Roasted poppy seed can be put in various salad dressings.
